Notes

• - The journals are cloth bound.
• - They cover the period August 1898 - August 1908.
• - When closed they are 5 ¼ inches wide, 11 ½ inches tall, and ¾ inch thick.
• - The words are spelled as the journals' author wrote them.
• - Many pages have been torn out from the backs of the journals.
• - The Gould & Halleron Annapolis City Directory for 1910 lists Mrs. Annie Hanson as a nurse, who resided at 172 Third Street, (called Fourth Street since March 1938) in Eastport.
• - Polk's City Directory for Annapolis, Maryland 1924 lists Annie as a midwife residing at 170 First Street
• - Mrs. Hanson's great-grandson, Theodore Christenson, Sr., notes that she emigrated to Eastport, from Denmark, with her husband John, in the late 19^th century. She became a midwife in order to help to support the family after John died in 1891 of lockjaw (received by stepping on a rusty nail while working at Santee Wharf at the Naval Academy). Annie also received a $12 per month pension, starting in 1891, from the U.S. Department of the Interior, as well as $2 per month for each of the following children while living and under the age of 16 (Theodore, Louis, Mary, Frankline, Annie and Martha)
• - Mr. Christenson provided Annie's midwifery license and Pension Certificate for inclusion in the book.
• - The journals contain a total of 406 entries. Among them, Annie assisted with 112 births in Annapolis (including 2 specific addresses), 275 in Eastport, 8 in West Annapolis, 3 on Back Creek, and 1 in "Bimbe" (Bembe?). A few locations are illegible. She helped to deliver 176 girls and 3 sets of twins.
• - Mrs. Stevens received the journals through her husband Bud's grandmother Moria who lived on Bay Ridge Avenue. Annie delivered Bud's father Louis on January 17, 1907. I've matched several entries with date of births in Robert McIntire' Annapolis Maryland Families, including members of the Heller, Lewis, and Geraci families.

• - Theodore and Martha had John Christenson b. 1906 (carpenter)
• - John married Mary Mitchell b. 1911
• - John and Mary had Theodore Christenson b. 1938 (Theodore is Annie's great grandson. He is married to Mary (maiden name Rosati) of Eastport and they currently live in Edgewater.)
